The Committee seeks input on the concept of a regional Elementary and Middle School to be constructed adjacent to the Lake Region High School.

The Committee will present an overview of this plan and alternatives, offer an opportunity for questions, and listen to feedback from attendees.

OCSU faces significant challenges that require the attention and cooperation of the community to address: the rising costs of education and the subsequent increases in taxation; the need to provide an excellent education for our students in safe, welcoming, and productive settings; the need to alleviate staffing shortages by providing a safe, sustainable, and enriching work environment; and to house our educational enterprise in school buildings that are efficient, functional, and cost-effective.

To meet these challenges, OCSU assessed the current state of our school buildings and facilities, considered the implications of forming a central middle school, and analyzed multiple scenarios involving the renovations of our buildings in combination with new construction. The architecture firm of Truex-Cullins was hired to assist in our analyses.

Truex-Cullins' work has shown that the least expensive option in the long term is to build a new regional elementary and middle school adjacent to Lake Region Union High School.

Whether to move in this direction will be the choice of the eligible voters of the seven towns that make up the Supervisory Union. This Forum will help educate these voters that ultimately shape the quality of education in our community.

For more information please link to the Long-Term Planning section of the OCSU website: (https://www.ocsu.org) including the Truex-Cullins reports and the work of the Committee.

Every Friday afternoon we hold an assembly in the gym with all students and staff! Just one of the few ways we aim to build community at ACS. Our assemblies follow the ABC format: Acknowledgements - Students and staff give positive shout-outs to each other! Business - Important school business is announced here. Community - A short game is organized that requires representatives from each grade while their peers cheer them on! As we've settled into this new routine, staff members have taken turns running assembly but stay tuned because next week, we have our first pair of students running Friday assemblies! We're excited to see what they come up with! Last Friday, grades competed in a team-building cup challenge! It was so fun to watch them work together on this challenge! Shout-out to 7th grade for winning! Nice team work!

October is Principal Appreciation Month, and we want to take a moment to celebrate our amazing principal, Jess! Every single day, she leads with heart, vision, and an unwavering commitment to our students and staff. From greeting students in the hallways with a smile (and maybe some light sarcasm) to guiding teachers through challenges and successes, Jess leads not just with words, but with action and empathy. She takes the time to truly listen, understand, and uplift those around her. Her compassion helps build a culture of trust and care that extends through our entire school community. Not only that but Jess consistently raises the bar for excellence --- pushing our school to reach higher, think deeper, and grow stronger together; encouraging growth, collaboration, and a shared belief in what’s possible. Thank you, Jess, for your compassion, your dedication, and the countless ways you go above and beyond to make our school thrive. We appreciate all the time, care, and love you pour into our students and staff every day.

The primary goal of the behavioral threat assessment is to prevent harm and promote the safety of everyone and everything involved:
the person showing unsafe behavior
students and staff impacted by the unsafe behavior
the school building and related property

Threat assessment is not an adversarial process; many threats are a cry for help. Having a team approach with a clear process allows for the safety of everyone involved. The process is designed to address, evaluate, and manage threatening behavior and troubling situations that may impact school safety. OCSU’s guide is based on best practices created by the U.S. Secret Service & U.S. Department of Education, and the need to follow these best practices are mandated by the Senate and House.

To learn more about behavioral threat assessment in OCSU, please visit this website. To report a potential incident please do one of the following:
Contact your school principal or the superintendent of schools (1-802-525-1204)
Email the team at: crisis@ocsu.org

Hi All,

Just a quick reminder that we have a PTC meeting tonight, Tuesday 10/14 at 6PM in the Art/Music room at Albany Community School. Agenda here.

To support families attending the meeting, the gym and playground will be open for children. A high school volunteer (Ashton Peck) will be present to help supervise, but we ask that parents review the following ground rules with your children beforehand:

  • Be respectful and kind: Keep hands to yourself, avoid rough play, and use indoor voices while in the school.

  • Use equipment properly: Treat balls, toys, and playground gear as you would during school.

  • Stay together, in the right areas: Kids should remain in the gym or on the playground—no wandering the halls.

  • No food in the gym: To keep things clean and safe, no food please. Water bottles are okay.

  • Follow directions: Ashton, our high school volunteer, is there to help—please listen to him. If there’s an issue or someone gets hurt, let him or another adult know right away.

Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for outdoor play. If they bring toys or personal items from home, be prepared that they may be shared.

Looking forward to seeing you all!

We had a great time with our first PBIS celebration of the year! On Wednesday, students either hiked Jay Peak or walked the Newport Bike Path and went to the park. It was great to celebrate student success and enjoy our beautiful Vermont nature!

Happy Custodian Appreciation Day! Today we want to recognize and celebrate our incredible custodian, Chad Tollman. Over the summer, Chad went above and beyond, working tirelessly on major renovations to improve our school building. Thanks to his hard work, we were able to start the year in a refreshed, welcoming space.

But Chad’s efforts don’t stop there—he works hard all year long to make sure our school is clean, safe, and running smoothly. From early mornings to late evenings, he is always there to lend a hand, fix a problem, or keep things shining. His dedication, positivity, and pride in his work make a huge difference every single day.

Thank you, Chad, for everything you do for our students, staff, and school community. We truly appreciate you!
